Scherzo for Piano and Stick
Nikola’s distinctive and theatrical musical style has provided the soundtrack to many Citizens’ productions in recent years, including Crime and Punishment, Hamlet, A Christmas Carol, This Restless House and Hansel & Gretel.Created as an homage to Italian cartoonist Osvaldo Cavandoli’s celebrated 1970’s cartoon series, La Linea, Mia Theil Have performs with a 1.9m-long wooden stick in a fast-paced, meticulously crafted physical performance punctuated with short poems by Peter Oswald. Nikola’s original live score moves between contemporary classical, world music and jazz. Scherzo is a shifting landscape of images and emotions, a kaleidoscope of imaginative transformations which are in turn light and impish and darkly unsettling.

Reviews
“Diverting, energetic, vaudevillian… The range of reference is dizzying. Using her stick for everything from mic-stand to lightsaber, Theil Have channels Charlie Chaplin, a revolutionary on the barricades or a torch-song singer with equal ease.”
The Stage
“Have and Kodjabashia have real chemistry, a playful, human one. The piece becomes more moving, with Kodjabashia’s beautiful, cinematic score and the way he plays you know you’re in the presence of a true artist, while Have’s movement becomes stripped down and doubles in it’s powerful clarity.”

“The stick was my companion now for 13 years and there is something good about ‘sticking to it’ and re-discovering its potential. This is something to be seen, not explained!”
