Cyrano de Bergerac

A Citizens Theatre, National Theatre of Scotland and Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh co-production
Love. War. And noses.
Cyrano de Bergerac

The hugely romantic Cyrano de Bergerac is given a Caledonian heart in a new production of Edwin Morgan’s Scots translation that’s brimming with Glaswegian patter. This production receives the classic Dominic Hill treatment (The Rivals, The Libertine), with stunning costumes from Scots fashion designer Pam Hogg and design from Tom Piper that’s sure to embody a truly Scottish celebration.

The brash and flamboyant Cyrano’s low self-image prevents him from revealing his love to Roxane. He lends his poetic skills instead to the (outwardly) handsome Christian, who wins Roxane’s heart through his passionate ghost-written letters. Throughout the Franco-Spanish war, Cyrano continues to put quill to parchment, risking his life in the process, to express his true feelings.

An ensemble of actors and musicians use Morgan’s chewy Scots verse to create a fresh take on the enduringly popular period piece, first seen in a legendary production by Communicado 25 years ago. Rostand’s original story was most famously given the Hollywood treatment in the Steve Martin comedy, Roxanne.

A timeless tale about unrequited love, Cyrano de Bergerac is presented by the Citizens Theatre at Tramway and the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, and tours to Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.
