The Second Stories project uses creative expression and harnesses the power of individuals telling their stories with the objective to initiate dialogue in communities.

The Citizens Learning team has a long standing commitment and relationship with community rehabilitation programmes across the city. Inspired by the exchange work, the Second Stories Scotland project was created by Citizens Learning to work with a group of adults in recovery and develop their creative, practical and social skills.

This project was in partnership with Turning Point Scotland, an addiction and recovery support agency.

Over an 8 weeks period, a group of adults in recovery attended sessions at the Citizens Theatre in creative writing, performance technique and digital sound.

Group members gained confidence and encouraged one another to create powerful and entertaining stories to perform as live spoken word against a designed sound backdrop.

Leading to a performance of 6 stories to a live audience, the stories were punctuated with discussion and reflection, encouraging the audience to share their stories with one another, hence the Second Story.

Second Stories Scotland premiered at the Citizens Theatre Circle Studio on 1 March 2012 and the next day at Raft, in the Adelphi Centre on the 2 April 2012. The evening was a great success and there are plans to explore a further programme of work next year.
