Thu 25 February – Sat 5 March 2016, Citizens Theatre

PRESS NIGHT Fri 26 February, 7.30pm

A vital piece of twenty-first-century Scottish drama tackling one of the most difficult and controversial subjects appearing regularly in our media will play at the Citizens Theatre from 25 February – 5 March 2016. David Harrower’s Blackbird is directed by Gareth Nicholls and stars Paul Higgins, best known for his roles in TV’s Utopia and The Thick of It alongside Citizens Theatre actor intern Camrie Palmer.

Blackbird depicts the meeting between a middle-aged man and a young woman who rake over their relationship fifteen years after it ended when he was 40 and she was only twelve years old.

The play was first performed at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2005, and has gone on to be performed across the world, earning writer David Harrower an Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2007. A new Broadway production starring Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams opens later this spring, with a film adaptation also scheduled for a 2016 release, under the title Una. Despite international acclaim for the play, this is a rare opportunity to see one of the most important pieces of twenty-first century Scottish drama in a main stage production in Scotland.

Based in Glasgow, Harrower’s other works for the stage include Ciara, a monologue play first performed by Blythe Duff at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and toured to the Citizens Theatre in 2014; Knives in Hens, which alongside Blackbird has also come to be regarded as a modern Scottish classic; 365, A Slow Air, Callum’s Road, as well as adaptations and translations of Mary Stuart, Woyzeck, The Government Inspector, Ivanov and many others.

Paul Higgins partnered with Deacon Blue singer and songwriter Ricky Ross to write The Choir for the Citizens Theatre last year, and returns to the Citizens’ stage having performed in King Lear in 2012. As part of her residency, Camrie Palmer has appeared in Lanark: A Life in Three Acts and Rapunzel at the Citizens Theatre.

Director Gareth Nicholls is the Citizens Theatre Main Stage Director in Residence. Appointed in April 2014, Nicholls’ residency at the theatre has seen him assist Artistic Director Dominic Hill on Hill’s production of Hamlet, as well as direct Sam Holcroft’s Vanya as part of the Citizens’ Up Close season and Into That Darkness which won five star reviews. His 2015 Edinburgh Fringe show A Gambler’s Guide To Dying written and performed by Gary McNair tours to the Adelaide Festival Fringe this spring.

Nicholls’ residency is supported by Creative Scotland’s Creative Futures Programme and the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
