Medea Media Release

Northern Broadsides presents

Tue 9 – Sat 13 March

After their success with the critically acclaimed production of Othello, featuring Lenny Henry, Northern Broadsides are set to stage Tom Paulin’s new adaption of Euripides’s tale of Greek tragedy, Medea.

Alone; betrayed by a husband she sacrificed everything for, Medea unleashes a horrific vengeance on her enemies, making both assassins and victims of her own children.

Featuring one of the most powerful female roles in the history of drama, Medea is an intense story fuelled by passion, hatred and deadly rage.  Heroic yet deadly, sympathetic yet appalling Medea’s barbaric actions will stir your emotions as you find yourself irresistibly drawn into the nightmare world of this spectacularly vengeful woman.

Northern Broadsides are internationally celebrated for their highly charged performance style and charismatic cast of actors, winning them the loyal following of the public and critics alike.  Their vitality, directness and energy will ignite the dramatic voltage of Tom Paulin’s gripping new version of this Greek tragedy.

Playwright and poet Tom Paulin has published eight collections of poetry as well as two versions of Greek drama on stage – Riot Act (based on Sophocles) and Seize the Fire (1990), a version of Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound. He is also known for his appearances on the BBC’s Newsnight Review.  Currently he is the G. M. Young Lecturer in English Literature at Hertford College, Oxford.

Writer Paulin said about the production “Medea is an intense, gruelling tragic play about that very rare form of murder, matricide. Anyone coming to see the play must expect to have their heart-strings torn”
