Citizens Theatre presents

By Annie Siddons
Directed by Lu Kemp

28 December 2015 – 3 January 2016, Citizens Theatre

PRESS NIGHT Fri 4 December, 7.30pm

The Citizens Theatre is inviting audiences looking for something a bit different this Christmas to let their hair down at Rapunzel, their funny, foolish, madcap festive show with a darkly mischievous side. Rapunzel runs from Saturday 28 November 2015 to Sunday 3 January 2016, and is suitable for the whole family aged 6 and over.

Rapunzel’s hair is out of control. It doesn’t matter what she does with it, it’ll never stay in one place. As Rapunzel comes of age, her loving but overbearing mother locks her in a tower to protect her from the world beyond their garden. But, like her hair, Rapunzel is not one to be contained. With the help of a wild pig, her hapless lover, and some bumbling criminal types, Rapunzel will put her world, and the world beyond, to rights.

Rapunzel is a funny, foolish, madcap story with a darkly mischievous side. The colours and chaos of the blooming garden surrounding Rapunzel’s tower burst into the beautiful auditorium of the Citizens Theatre, created by the design team behind the theatre’s 5-star Christmas 2014 show A Christmas Carol. An abundance of colourful characters run amok through the sunny Italian countryside, played by a motley troupe of actors performing original songs and music live on stage. Rapunzel is a classic tale of knowing when to let go, and the challenges that come with finding your independence that the whole family can enjoy together this Christmas.

Director Lu Kemp works principally in new writing, devised theatre and dance.  Her previous work for young people includes the National Theatre of Scotland’s The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish, Arabian Nights at the Tricycle Theatre and Catherine Wheel’s One Thousand Paper Cranes. Kemp is an Associate Artist of theatre company Inspector Sands, and directed the company’s 2009 Edinburgh International Festival Fringe Award-winning play If That’s All There Is.

Joining Lu Kemp on the creative team are designer Rachael Canning and lighting designer Lizzie Powell, who created the beautiful designs of the Citizens Theatre’s 2014 production of A Christmas Carol. Composer Michael John McCarthy (Into That Darkness, Fever Dream: Southside, Sports Day) creates original music and songs to be performed live on stage.

Family tickets for Rapunzel start from £33 for a family of three to £71 for a family of five. More information about Rapunzel can be found on the Citizens Theatre’s website citz.co.uk. Tickets are available from the website, or by calling 0141 429 0022.
