Festive Fun at the Citz 2011

‘Tis the season to visit the Citizens Theatre this December, as we present three productions as part of our festive offering to suit all ages and tastes.

Sat 3 Dec 2011 – Sat 7 Jan 2012
Sponsored by Glasgow Dine Around
Recommended for age 5+

The creative team who created the hit version of Beauty & the Beast in 2010 return to present HANSEL & GRETEL. Guy Hollands will direct, in a new version by Scottish actor and writer, Alan McHugh, whose adaptions of Beauty & the Beast and Cinderella for the theatre have delighted audiences (“McHugh’s finely wrought script melds strands of folklore with daft and rapid patter” – The Herald).  Designer Neil Haynes (The Grapes of Wrath, They Shoot Horses Don’t They?, Topdog Underdog) will transport us to a magical world filled with giant sweets, buried deep in an enchanted forest; whilst Claire McKenzie (Divided City, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Othello) will compose a new score of original live music.

This re-imagining of the Brothers Grimm classic tale will feature Gemma McElhinney (nominated Best Actress CATS Award 2011) and David Carlyle respectively – both of whom were part of the award-winning The Monster in the Hall ensemble (The Stage Awards for Acting Excellence 2011). They will be accompanied by a stellar cast including Jim Sturgeon, Jennifer Harraghy and the theatre’s current Actor Intern, Lynn Kennedy.

A family show rich with fun, suspense and beautiful songs, Hansel & Gretel will be brought to life through vivid and interactive story telling, accompanied by captivating original live music in an intimate auditorium where everyone can feel part of the story. At this festive time of year, the Citizens prides itself on creating quality children’s theatre for families to enjoy together. “a superb piece of musical theatre, beautiful to look at, magnificently acted, and powerfully sung”
The Scotsman **** (Beauty & the Beast, 2010).

We are delighted that Hansel & Gretel is sponsored by Glasgow Dine Around, a unique eating out offering from over 80 of Glasgow’s top restaurants.

For younger audiences, Clare McGarry’s Grinagog Theatre returns in association with the Citizens Theatre to present a new 45 minute interactive Christmas show, featuring puppets, music and song. LITTLE ULLA is a festive tale about a special mountain goat whose magical horn makes her different from the others
Claire McGarry’s other performance and devised work includes Wonderland, which appeared as part of the Citizens Christmas programme in 2010, and Twinklebell and Meep and Moop, both of which toured nurseries. Clare specialises in creating magical and engaging work for early years children and is “fast becoming a new force in Scottish theatre for very young children.” - Sunday Herald.

Wed 14 – Sat 17 Dec.
Adults only!

For those who like their Christmas entertainment a little more tongue-in-cheek, the Citizens Community Company offers up its yearly helping of WICKED CHRISTMAS.  This is the Company’s satirical glance at the things we love to hate about Christmas and is a laugh out loud escape from the festive madness, strictly for adults only!
Everyone has a Christmas tale to tell…and most of us can cast our minds back to something that we’d rather forget!  Join our drunk uncles and dancing grannies for a truly face reddening Ho Ho Ho.
The Community Company is made up of around thirty non-professional permanent members aged from 22 to 80, from all walks of life; living, learning or working in Glasgow.  Directed by Neil Packham.

Whether you’re 3 or 93, the perfect festive treat is waiting for you at the Citizens Theatre.
