Festive Fun at the Citizens Theatre

‘Tis the season to visit the Citizens Theatre this December, as we are delighted to present three productions as part of our festive offering to suit all ages and tastes.

On the main stage Guy Hollands will direct BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, in a new version by Scottish actor and writer, Alan McHugh, whose version of Cinderella delighted audiences last year (McHugh’s finely wrought script melds strands of folklore with daft and rapid patter – The Herald).  Designer Philip Witcomb (Othello, Educating Rita) returns to the Citizens to create the fairytale realm in which the story unfolds, while Claire McKenzie (Cinderella, Othello) will compose a new score of original live music.

This production of the well-loved fairytale will feature Gemma McElhinney (10,000 Metres Deep – Oran Mor, Peer Gynt, Mother Courage – Dundee Rep) and Jim Sturgeon (Equus, A Christmas Carol – Dundee Rep) in the title roles. They will be accompanied by a stellar cast including Jenny Hulse, Mark McDonnell, Josephine Warren and the theatre’s current Actor Intern, Jonathan Dunn.

Beauty and the Beast is a bittersweet tale that has charmed generations with its mystery, suspense and romance.  Here it is brought to life with vivid and interactive story telling, accompanied by captivating original live music in an intimate auditorium where everyone can feel part of the story. At this time of year especially, the Citizens prides itself on creating quality childrens theatre for families to enjoy together, recommended for 7+.

For our younger audiences, WONDERLAND in the Circle Studio is an interactive show with songs and puppets for 3-6 year olds, following the adventures of Max the mouse.  Max has a big dream - to be an ice skating champion!  But it’s cold outside and the duck pond is hard to get to when you’re only a little mouse.  Join Max as he learns how to skate and meets new friends including Santa’s ninja elf and Jackie the bird!

Wonderland is created by Claire McGarry, in association with the Citizens Theatre, whose other performance and devised work includes Twinklebell and Meep and Moop, both of which toured nurseries. Clare specialises in creating magical and engaging work for early years children.

For those who like their Christmas entertainment a little more tongue-in-cheek, the Citizens Community Company offers up its yearly helping of WICKED CHRISTMAS.  This year subtitled The 12 Days of Christmas, this is the Company’s satirical glance at the things we love to hate about Christmas and is a laugh out loud escape from the festive madness, strictly for adults only!

The Community Company is made up of around thirty non-professional permanent members aged from 22 to 80, from all walks of life; living, learning or working in Glasgow.  Directed by Neil Packham and Kate Black, the show will feature live music, selected by Musical Director, Scott Twynholm.

Whether you’re 3 or 103, the perfect festive treat is waiting for you at the Citizens Theatre.
