A Funny Valentine Media Release

Told by Mike Maran
Directed by Patrick Sandiford.

Chet Baker is an iconic figure in the history of American Jazz – he sang and played himself into the hearts of millions while falling into a personal hell of heroin addiction.  Sometimes amusing, sometimes dark, this is a fascinating insight into the world of a great musician and notorious character.

Mike Maran’s unique brand of storytelling is married here with live music and features many of Chet Baker’s hits played live on stage. Baker’s repertoire was the iconic tunes of the American Songbook and includes When I Fall in Love, Embraceable You, I Fall in Love too Easily, Someone to Watch Over Me and of course, My Funny Valentine.

Mike Maran is probably best known for his acclaimed theatre production of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin which sells out in theatres all over the UK, as well as such notable successes as ‘Did You Used to be R.D.Laing?, Mahler: Song & Dance Man, The Little World of Don Camillo and Picasso & Me.

Colin Steele is one of the very best jazz trumpet players in the UK, Colin has an international reputation.  His album, Journey Home was voted BBC Jazz CD of the Year, 2004.  Colin is a huge fan and a great interpreter of Chet’s music.

Robert Pettigrew studied music at the RSAMD and Edinburgh University.  He has worked extensively in theatre as a composer, performer and musical director throughout the U.K. and abroad. In 2007 he won the Critics Award For Theatre In Scotland for his work on Man Of La Mancha at the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh and was nominated the previous year for the score of Nighthawks, a jazz opera, based on the painting by Edward Hopper.

Patrick Sandford is Artistic Director of The Nuffield, where he has directed both classic and new plays. He won Best Director in the TMA awards for Much Ado About Nothing and The Winter Wife by Claire Tomalin (which was nominated for five TMA awards and transferred to the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith).  Recently, Patrick has directed A Streetcar Named Desire, and Oscar Wilde’s Salome.  Previous work with Mike Maran includes Novecento and Picasso and Me.  He is currently working on Anthony and Cleopatra for the Nuffield.
