Redevelopment: Expanding our artistic offer
As one of Scotland’s flagship producing theatres, our artistic programme is at the core of what we do. The redevelopment will enable more complex theatre productions to be presented on our main stage, meaning a greater range of shows will be able to be brought to our venue.
Lowering the stage rake will bring it in line with other UK theatres. This will allow a greater range of visiting companies to be able to present work, including dance and disabled–led work.
Our improved fly tower will be able to lift and control much heavier sets, meaning that larger-scale touring productions will be able to come to the Citizens. Watch our Fly Tower film to hear more about the impact this change will have.
Expanding our backstage facilities will enable us to be the most exciting and adventurous producing theatre in Scotland.
New spaces
A new multi-purpose 152-seat studio theatre will allow us to accommodate more performances than ever before and champion a new generation of emerging theatre makers.
The new purpose-built learning studio will not only allow us to host workshops but also present smaller-scale performances and sharings.
Our rehearsal spaces will be equipped with modern, dynamic and accessible facilities.
New Talent
We nurture and develop new talent, discovering and supporting emerging artistic voices and helping to create new dramatic works. We will provide improved spaces for theatre makers to develop innovative and experimental work. Our expanded studio theatre will form a pivotal part of the Citizens Theatre's artistic vision, providing a platform for up-and-coming artists and the next generation of writers, performers and creative talent.
