The Monster in the Hall
TAG
A new play by David Greig, presented in association with Arts and Theatres Trust Fife. At the Citizens and touring in Autumn 2010.
Duck Macatarsney cares for her biker dad whose MS is getting increasingly bad. Her Dad - Duke - is a spliff smoking (for medicinal reasons you understand), bike riding, heavy metal loving, horror movie loving, pizza eating widower who’s brought up Duck since the death of her Mother in a crash. The two of them are just about surviving when one morning the Duke wakes up blind and the Duck hears that the Social Services are coming to take her away.
The Monster in the Hall follows Duck as she tries to protect her world from the terrifying prospect of change.
A low budget indie comedy musical about a girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown played out by four actors and a big fat motorbike which goes vrrooommm.
A new play from the same team that created the smash hit Yellow Moon (Best Show for Children and Young People TMA Awards 2007).
Cast includes David Carlyle, Beth Marshall, Keith Macpherson and Gemma McElhinney.

PRESS
“A brilliant ensemble…warm and touching”
The Times ★★★★
“It took about 4 minutes to win over the audience of young teenagers”
The Times ★★★★
“no ordinary 75 minutes…David Greig’s latest play for young people is a wildly imaginative, multi-dimensional musical farce combining motorbikes and multiple sclerosis, sixties girl groups and social services, fairy tales and fantasy roleplay.”
OnStageScotland.com
“beautifully observed, cleverly constructed and very enjoyable.”
OnStageScotland.com
“Guy Hollands’ TAG theatre production, is brilliantly realised in bare-bones narrative style by Gemma McElhinney, David Carlyle, Beth Marshall and Keith Macpherson, working at high velocity and accompanying each other with amplified sound effects. They are a tightly drilled ensemble, passionate, playful and yet serious, gripping us one minute, cracking us up the next, before melting our hearts”

Hello, i wondered if you had any plans to come to Argyll or where and when we can take our young carers to see 'Monster in the Hall' in the the future? Unfortunately we could not make it to Glasgow this week but would like to see it sometime. Thank you, Arlene Colewell North Argyll Young Carers Project

Booked 'The Monster in the Hall' based on how great 'Yellow Moon' was. This production is done on the same low budget way, leaving it to the actors to bring the story and our imaginations to life. It does that..It certainly does that. The difference is this is a frantic farce, fast, fantastic, furious, and funny but with a serious story at its core. Characterisation fab, acting great - full of energy and life. Loved the home made sound effects, the fantasy game play and the Mastermind quiz. There were also moments to bring a tear to a glass eye too, but you'd have had to wipe away the tears of laughter first!

A must see production which had me laughing and crying! Vibrant and perceptive, as well as extremely funny, David's writing gives an insight into the lives of young carers, which is superbly performed by the cast. It has been a great pleasure being involved in this project with you all. Good luck with the tour. We can't wait to come to the Citz!

Just returned from the preview. Loved it. Great writing, production and acting. Moving, compelling, true-to-life, hilarious, inspiring. A tale about a young carer whose ability to care and to cope may just be undermined by the positive and possibly misguided intentions of guidance teachers and social workers. Looking forward to seeing it again at the Citizen.

Hi there, I was wondering about booking this production "Monster In The Hall" to come to our school (Kinross High School, new Loch Leven Community Campus. I'd also be interested in offering some students the option of participating in the workshop. We have excellent brand new facilities here with a large assembly hall/theatre and plenty of accommodation to serve as Green Room/Dressing Room. Can you send me information and booking instructions? Thank you! Sincerely, L Moss

Hi Arlene, I'm afraid from Saturday, that's the current tour finished. We are hopeful that the show may re-tour at some point in the future, but there are no plans at present. If it's being re-toured, we'll announce it on this website, on Twitter and Facebook...or you could sign up to our enews (see form on the homepage).
