Mark Steel’s In Town

Visiting Company

Following his highly acclaimed, Sony Award winning and Writers Guild Award winning Radio 4 comedy show Mark Steel’s In Town, and the publication of a book of the same title, writer and stand-up comedian Mark Steel is back on the road - part of the Glasgow International Comedy Festival.

Bringing an element of Mark Steel’s In Town to each live performance, means Mark will write material shedding light on the quirkiness and interesting aspects of every town and city he visits, allowing each show to be unique - something local audiences up and down the country will devour and enjoy. Mark is committed to performing a routine about the history of every town he’ll perform in. However, he may regret making this promise!
As well as Mark Steel’s In Town, Mark has presented the BAFTA nominated Mark Steel Lectures for BBC2, is a regular on BBC One’s Have I Got News For You and Radio 4’s Newsquiz. He’s written several, acclaimed books, including: Reasons To Be Cheerful and What’s Going On and he writes a weekly column for The Independent.

Really enjoyable show. Great singing and especially acting of the mostly young cast - you have to able to act well these days if you are in opera. Much was demanded of the cast and they all did well. Loved the risque jokes - audience all came out grinning widely and saying how much they appreciated the humour. Good direction , imaginative production. Tremendous.

I went with a group of women friends and was blown away by this performance. All the acting was great- the real tragedy of men disempowered by poverty in the 30s was tempered by the funny vignettes in between and the real love between the 2 main characters. I have recommended it to everyone!

Wonderful, heartbreaking and darkly funny play, that doesn't even half do it justice - superb acting and a script that managed to make me laugh and cry at the same time. Thought provoking, shocking and so sad, an absolute must-see. Do not miss this play.

We received the following feedback from our enews competition winner: "Thank you very much indeed for the tickets you left for my wife and I and the opportunity to see some wonderful acting. The play was very thought provoking and funny at the same time. I thought Mlles was very comfortable on the stage and took command of the play from the start and I am sure his performance and the audience's response lifted the confidence of all who were there performing such a delicate balancing act between pathos and humour. Everyone was so professional and entertaining so please thank all involved, including the wonderful staff front of house who, as always, were the greatest of ambassadors for Glasgow in general and The Citizens in particular. I have witnessed many performances in many theatres and I can honestly say, and often have done, that The Citizens is one of the top theatre companies in the country. My thanks to you once again and to all involved for a wonderful night out and I look forward to many more of your performances."

My husband & I came to Gothic last night. Neither of us had been in the Citizens for over 30 years despite regularly attending theatre performances throughout the city. It had certainly changed and we thought the foyer was nice and the convenience of car parking excellent. The seating obviously in the studio is not the most comfortable however the intimacy it provides to the show was very atmospheric and certainly tolerable for the short space of an hour. We very much enjoyed the show and thought the young co were excellent, especially the lead roles in both the black cat and premature burial. We will certainly be keeping an eye out for more shows which we might enjoy. Thanks for a highly entertaining night.

My wife and I were at the opening night last night (Fri 21st Oct)and it was brilliant. (Even if some of the 'humour' was indeed non-PC and sharply 'edgy' for some). We didn't have the likes of Ian Cutherbertson, but the Citz's new artistic director Dominic Hill invited the audience to remain for an after-show impromptu discussion with the original playwright Peter Nichols -the warmly appreciative sentiment from the audience was almost tangible. Peter paid praise to The Citz for having put the play on when he had had refusals from all the other mainstream British theatres he had approached. It was also astonishing to hear how in the 'swinging sixties' he had to appear before the Lord Chamberlain in the presence of uniformed military personnel. The establishment's censorship of the theatre was still in force at the time!

The play was extremely well written and acted by a stellar cast. The play provided thought provoking messages alongside humour. The characters were believable. As well as tackling sectarianism brilliantly, the play also managed to convey other ism messages and therefore was very well researched. I hope it reaches a wider audience.

Hiya, i was wondering if you could help me. I work in a dementia unit within Erskine home for ex service men and women and think that they may particularly enjoy a visit to hansel and Gretel! Could you provide me with some more info and prices etc. and do you offer any sort of discount for the ex service men and women? many thanks Julianne Gow

Hi Roisin, Obviously we'd recommend booking in advance to guarantee a ticket. You can pay for a ticket now and collect it anytime before the show (ideally more than 15mins before start time). You can reserve a ticket via 0141 429 0022 without paying; but this has to be paid 3 days before the show, i.e. Wednesday. Does that help?

Hello, can you buy tickets at the door on the night or should I book in advance, although it is only a few days away now. Planning on going on the Saturday night at 730pm. Thanks.

Hi, when and how will people be notified if their story is going to be used in "Wicked Christmas"?

This play explores the themes of prejudice and bigotry in an entertaining and engaging way. I particularly liked the way humour was used and I believe the message was very clearly and effectively communicated to the young people in the audience.

Hi Michelle, This production was by XLC (ex-students of the drama course at Langside College). If you contact them directly, they may be able to help. I'm afraid we, at the Citz, don't have a copy of this script.

Good afternoon, We are a school in South Yorkshire, England, that is after purchasing the script 'Lear's Daughters' and we cannot find it anywhere! All we can find it the book by Marjorie B. Kellogg and William B. Rossow called Lears Daughters! If you can let me know where you were able to get the script from to do the production of 'Lear's Daughters' it would be very much appriciated. Many Thanks, Michelle

This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to view a thought-provoking and topical drama. "Scarfed for Life" stimulated many ideas for students working on their Investigative Drama performances. This year our group theme was "Out of Control" based on the London riots. One group was exploring sectarianism so this was a real gift. Thanks very much it was much appreciated by our students and staff.

There will be more resources related to Scarfed for Life uploaded to Glow (the national intranet for schools) soon.
