Citizens Theatre

A funny, foolish, madcap story, with a darkly mischievous side, that the whole family can enjoy together this Christmas. A story about knowing when to let go and the challenges that come with finding your place in the world.

Rapunzel’s hair is out of control. It doesn’t matter what she does with it, it’ll never stay in one place. As Rapunzel comes of age, her loving but overbearing mother locks her in a tower to protect her from the world beyond their garden. But, like her hair, Rapunzel is not one to be contained. With the help of a wild pig, her hapless lover, and some bumbling criminal types, Rapunzel will put her world, and the world beyond, to rights.

The colours and chaos of the blooming garden surrounding Rapunzel’s tower burst into the beautiful auditorium of the Citizens Theatre, created by the design team behind the 5-star A Christmas Carol. An abundance of colourful characters run amok through the sunny Italian countryside, played by a motley troupe of actors performing original songs and music live on stage.

Hi John, we recommend Rapunzel for everyone aged over 6 years. There is brand new pop-punk music performed live on stage by the cast, with Honeyblood drummer Cat Myers on drums. As with all of our festive productions, Rapunzel is a very theatrical show with an engaging story - we hope that your family will love it!

At the other end of the family scale, is there enough artistic material & themes in Rapunzel to hold the attention of teenagers (15, 13)? Or is it more of a younger kids show?

18th June 2015

Hi Christine, I think your 8 and your 10 year old will love it! We're recommending that Rapunzel is suitable for those aged 6+, as there's going to be some wonderful creepiness to the story that some younger children might find a bit scary. If your 5 year old is feeling brave, though, then they would be very welcome to come along. We'll be announcing information about a Christmas show for 3 - 6 year olds later this summer, and this may be more suitable for your younger children. I'll make sure you're emailed with information about this when it's on sale.
