549: Scots of the Spanish Civil War
Wonder Fools in association with Citizens Theatre and the Brunton Theatre
1936. In villages, towns and cities across Scotland, 549 lives of contrasting backgrounds, ideologies and religions are gradually intertwining. Spurred on by their burning passion for equality and freedom, they will form the Scottish ranks of the Spanish Civil War’s legendary International Brigade.
Based on a true story, this new play follows four miners from the streets of East Lothian to the valleys of Spain. They gave up everything they knew: for a land they did not know; for a people they had never met; and for a cause they believed was right.
To coincide with this production we are selling copies of When the Gorbals fought Franco. The short book by Mark Gillespie tells the story of John Joseph Lynch - a young man from the Gorbals who, like the men in the play, was an International Brigade volunteer. You can purchase the book for £5 at our Box Office or online now.
