Refugee Boy - Companion work
Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah adapted for the stage by Lemn Sissay is coming to the Citizens Theatre in March 2014.
The play follows the moving and inspiring story of 14 year old Alem, who having lived in both Ethiopia and Eritrea, seeks refuge in the UK. From care home, to foster home, from school to court, Alem’s journey makes him reach inside himself to find courage to go on and strength to speak out.
As a pre-show curtain raiser to the main stage production of Refugee Boy, the Citizens Theatre in association with Scottish Refugee Council will present a music, song and storytelling event with local people, refugees and those seeking asylum.
Over 6 weeks, participants will explore themes from the play such as, arriving in a new place, belonging and finding a home, and work towards a unique event allowing the reflections of those seeking refuge in Glasgow today to be heard.
