The Pillowman returns by special invitation Media Release

XLC Theatre Company in association with the Citizens Theatre
By Martin McDonagh
Back by special invitation, XLC Theatre Company recreate their acclaimed version of “The Pillowman” that was first presented at the Citizens Theatre in February 2009. A rollercoaster ride of comedy and cruelty, this production is a shocking and macabre examination of authoritarian brutality.
The gruesome tales of a short story writer living in a totalitarian state seems to mirror the disappearance of local schoolchildren. Implicated by his brother, who confesses to the crimes, he attempts to save his stories from destruction.
McDonagh’s deeply disturbing, sadistically funny and thought provoking tour de force was the winner of the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play and the 2005 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Foreign Play.
XLC is the postgraduate theatre company of Langside College, created to give newly qualified actors an early professional platform. The cast features the cream of up and coming Scottish acting talent and includes Mark Prendergast who has recently also appeared in Richard III (Bard in the Botanics), Mud and Bliss (Tron) and Slick (Vox Motus). Cast members Iain de Caestecker and Kevin Mains have both appeared in River City and Kevin also appeared in BBC drama Zig Zag Love alongside Robert Carlyle.
