SHAKESPEARE SHORTZ
Putting the audience in the spotlight

The Citizens Theatre is putting its audience in the spotlight this autumn, for a special project called Shakespeare Shortz. The theatre wants members of the public to post clips of them “doing some Shakespeare”, as a response to their Shakespeare Shortz video on YouTube.

This autumn the Citizens will present a main stage production of Othello, directed by Guy Hollands; and Young Co. will present a studio show called Lend Me Your Ears, in which they perform some of their favourite excerpts by the Bard.

The volume of recognisable, profound and utterly memorable Shakespearean quotes is quite overwhelming and the theatre hopes that the public will help it celebrate the works of the greatest writer who ever lived in this simple community focussed project.

A selection of favourite submissions will be shown at the Citizens Theatre before Lend Me Your Ears, two entrants will win a pair of tickets for Othello and all submissions will be profiled online.

To demonstrate that it’s the taking part that counts, the brave employees of the Citizens Theatre allowed themselves to be filmed for the project. From Box Office, Production and Fundraising to Artistic Directors, Designers and Marketing; the Citz team, along with a few professional actors for good measure have created a film worth watching:

NOTES TO EDITORS

POSTING A VIDEO RESPONSE
Below each video in YouTube there is an option to post a video response. Individuals then have the option to either record directly into YouTube from a webcam, to choose an existing film on YouTube or to upload a new film.

The Citizens Theatre made a concerted effort to create their film using non-professional methods. All excerpts were recorded on a Casio Exilim camera or directly into a webcam. This was to demonstrate to the public that making a film can be quick and simple. There’s no fiddling with white balance or focus. This project is very much open to any member of public. Submissions can be as well produced or as simple as the participants choose.

CITZ WEB PRESENCE
The Citizens Theatre is committed to using Digital Media and Shakespeare Shortz is an integrated part of the theatre’s approach to marketing and communications. The theatre recently had an online revamp with a brand new site that combines the work of both the Citizens Theatre and TAG. This site fully integrates the company’s content from YouTube, Flickr, Blogger and Twitter.
