GLASGAY! 2011 MEDIA RELEASE - SPAIN AND CH CH CHANGES

Scotland’s annual celebration of queer culture 15 Oct - 12 Nov 2011
“People live in direct relation to the heroes and sheroes that they have” Maya Angelou

It’s been a momentous year of popular uprisings, revolutions and social change as well as the worldwide economic recession which has had a devastating effect on all of our lives.  It’s only one year since the Equality Act 2010 and we have still much to gain in this next decade.  This year in a slightly more modest programme, we celebrate and question our “REPRESENTATION”.  We ask, are our identities, lifestyles, relationships, families and nuances of issues understood or effectively represented?  When some Church leaders still cry abomination; when opera companies can’t say “queer” and some think there are too many lesbians and gays on Coronation Street.  Why do these things go unchallenged? How do we get more effective representation? Glasgay! exists in a continuum that effectively highlights our diverse communities and offers interesting and multiple perspectives that others simply do not.
In our theatre programme Herald Angel award winner, Grant Smeaton (Bette/Cavett 2010), returns with CH CH CHANGES, a kaleidoscopic array of characters growing up through the sexually ambiguous 70’s.  Written by Martin O’Connor (Playing Houses, 2009), this promises to be a compelling and provocative play.  James Ley returns with his new one man play SPAIN, the tale of a polyamorous ex-Pat thrown into his first mid-life crisis at 35.  Derek McLuckie, in collaboration with Pauline Goldsmith, will create GLUE BOY BLUES, a visionary journey of psychedelic prose and misplaced love.  It’s a coming of age cautionary tale with song, dance and comedy.  Random Accomplice will stage LOVE HURTS, a darkly comic tale of bisexual love and neighbourly passions gone wrong.  Written and directed by Johnny McKnight (Smalltown; Little Johnny’s Big Gay Wedding) audiences can revel in this biting little intimate drama guaranteed to make you gasp, giggle and greet.
