CASTING ANNOUNCED FOR FIRST REVIVAL OF ACCLAIMED MIGRANT CRISIS PLAY

CO-PRODUCTION MARRIES OLD HANDS WITH FRESH DIRECTING TALENT

The Citizens Theatre has announced the cast members for its forthcoming presentation of Anders Lustgarten’s searing play about the migrant crisis – Lampedusa – which plays at the Citizens Theatre Circle Studio from 8 Nov – 18 Nov.

A Scottish premiere, this will be the first re-staging of the Lampedusa, which sold-out its initial run at the Soho Theatre in 2015.

Andy Clark is well known to Citizens audiences, having previously taken to its stage to play major Shakespearean characters such as Hamlet and Iago, with more recent appearances in Lanark and The Libertine.

Andy will play the role of Stefano: a fisherman struggling to come to terms with events in the Mediterranean.

He will be joined on stage by Louise Mai Newberry, who starred in the original 2015 production at the Soho Theatre and reprises the role of Denise.

A sell-out show in London and a critics’ favourite (‘Powerfully affective’ Independent ‘Essential…heartening’ Financial Times, ‘Shattering’ The Times, ‘...brave, bold and moving’ Guardian) the Citizens Theatre has joined forces with rising stars of Scottish theatre, Wonder Fools, who arrive fresh from presenting The Coolidge Effect at the Traverse Theatre.

Glasgow’s Jack Nurse will direct the production, with the support of a Dewar Arts Award and Creative Scotland. Jack is no stranger to the Citizens, having worked as Assistant Director at the theatre on several previous productions including Hay Fever, Oresteia: This Restless House and Blackbird.

In advance of rehearsals starting later this month, Citizens Theatre Artistic Director Dominic Hill said,

“This is a great moment for the company. We’re delighted to be able to welcome Jack back to the Citz for his first production with us as a fully-fledged director.”

“We see our role in developing new Scottish theatre talent as absolutely central to everything we do. I can think of few better ways to express this than working with Wonder Fools to bring the first revival of a powerful piece of critically acclaimed contemporary theatre to Glasgow.”

Tickets for Lampedusa are available to purchase from the Citizens Theatre’s website citz.co.uk or by calling the Box Office on 0141 429 0022.
